Minimizing Your Exposure to Everyday Carcinogens
Share
I'm engrossed in a book titled "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer" as I'm focused on minimizing my exposure after being diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer last year. The book sheds light on how everyday products like bubble baths, cell phones, clothes, lettuce, meat, nail polish, hair dye, tattoos, and tampons can contain or expose us to carcinogens. According to the book, the average American encounters at least five known carcinogens daily. Quite alarming!
Did you know there are five routes of entry for carcingens?
- Absorption (skin)
- Inhalation (lung)
- Ingestion (digestive tract)
- Injection (bloodstream)
- Ambient exposures (immediate surroundings)
Absorption
When it comes to absorption, carcinogens can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream, causing harm to cells and organs. It is crucial to be cautious about the products we apply to our bodies, as many contain toxic substances, including cosmetics, personal care items, and clothing. To make things easier for you, my latest ebook features a curated list of brands offering safe cosmetic and personal care products, among other things, saving you the trouble of searching.
Inhalation
Whenever we breathe, we take in a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, water, carbon dioxide, ozone, vapors, smoke, dust, pollen, and harmful air pollutants that can penetrate our lungs. These hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) contain cancer-causing chemicals derived from everyday items like tobacco smoke, engine exhaust, cleaning products, paint solvents, art supplies, building materials, and scented products. Radon, a Group 1 carcinogen, is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Exposure can occur indoors in homes, offices, or schools through cracks in floors, walls, and foundations. To ventilate your home effectively, make it a habit to open windows daily all year round to allow fresh air in. Additionally, using a HEPA or charcoal air filter can help minimize toxins in the air. My newest ebook will have a list of recommended air filter brands.
Ingestion
Food, water, and medications are absorbed, and it's crucial to consider the presence of pesticides and heavy metals. While organic foods may be costly, when weighing the costs, cancer is a far more expensive outcome. The USDA's Pesticide Data Program has identified over fifty pesticide residues on conventional lettuce, including three that are potential carcinogens. Even your "healthy" salad may contain cancer-causing pesticides. Choosing organic options is essential. Medications, whether over-the-counter or prescription, can contribute to the development of cancer. The more synthetic the medication, the more harmful it can be for your health. Lastly, given the discovery of highly toxic substances in our drinking water, exploring filtration solutions is crucial. My ebook provides a curated list of brands, saving you the effort of researching on your own.
Injection
Toxins have the potential to enter our bodies through the skin when it is punctured or pierced by a needle, such as in the case of tattoos, vaccinations, and intravenous drugs. A 2011 study published in The British Journal of Dermatology highlighted the presence of carcinogenic nanoparticles in tattoo inks. For instance, red ink may contain mercury, while other colors are often sourced from heavy metals like lead, antimony, chromium, and cobalt. So, before you decide to get a tattoo, it's worth considering that it could have negative effects rather than positive ones!
Ambient Exposures
Two prevalent cancer-related exposures include radiation and artificial lighting. Radiation can stem from various sources such as sunlight, mammograms, x-rays, nuclear facilities, cancer therapies, and cellular devices. Thermography serves as a radiation-free alternative to mammograms. Electromagnetic fields (EMFs), classified as a Group 2B possible carcinogen by the IARC, are emitted by mobile phones, computers, and wireless networks. Using EMF-reducing cases, earphones, and laptop shields is advisable. Consider checking out my ebook for a list of EMF protection brands.
In summary, "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer" provides valuable insights into how everyday products and activities can expose us to carcinogens. By understanding the five routes of entry—absorption, inhalation, ingestion, injection, and ambient exposures—we can take proactive steps to minimize our risk. Making informed choices about the products we use, the air we breathe, the food we consume, and the technologies we interact with can significantly reduce our exposure to harmful substances.
